For most new businesses, their first task is to establish themselves in the area and build up a relationship with customers – but for Alvechurch Insurance Services, this part is already done.

The name and the premises might be new, but the faces will be very familiar to village residents, and the roots of the business date back more than 40 years.

The team (father-and-son partners Brian and Andrew Hawkins, Julie Baker and Will Foley) were all part of David E Matthews Insurance Services, which was founded in 1973 and based in a 500-year-old building on The Square.

After David sadly passed away in December 2015, they decided to make a few changes – but very much wanted to stay in the heart of Alvechurch with its strong sense of community and its loyal client base.

“We’ve got to know all our customers really well over the years and they know and trust us, so it made sense to try and stay in the village,” says Andrew.

Vacant premises in Alvechurch are like gold dust, but help was at hand in the shape of village butcher Geoff Crow, who agreed to let out the ground floor of his home adjacent to the butcher’s shop.

Alvechurch Insurance Services took up residence in the historic building in January, welcoming customers into their smartly-refurbished offices overlooking the pretty rear garden.

The fact that local clients are able to visit the team face to face – “the old-fashioned way”, as Andrew puts it – is one of the main advantages of this firm, as the team can offer a friendly chat and a personalised service that you just wouldn’t find with an online insurance provider.

Customers can always speak to the same person, and maintaining the village location means that everyone knows where they are.

As one happy customer pointed out in a recent letter to The Village, “It’s so nice to walk into an office and be dealt with, instead of having to answer nine phone options to speak to someone on the other side of the country.”

In addition, getting to know the customers means the team can provide a really thorough service and ensure that clients know exactly what they are signing up for, without any hidden extra costs.

Of course, Alvechurch Insurance Services also offers a wealth of experience, with Brian having been in the trade for 60 years, Andrew for 35 years and Julie for 20 years.
